Trailer - WTF Is 'The BFG'?

In the middle of "Star Wars" fever, only Steven Spielberg could find a way to steal some of the attention.

The first trailer for "The BFG," the filmmaker's highly-anticipated adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book about the titular character dropped Wednesday and the internet liked the sh** out of it. While it was just a tease, it definitely piqued our interest and raised our expectations. Because the last time Spielberg worked with the late screenwriter Melissa Mathison on a family film, the end result was "E.T."

So why is "The BFG" such a BFD? Here are all the things you need to know about one of 2016's must-see films.

Tell your gamer friends who still play waaaay too much "Doom" that, no, it doesn't stand for "Big Effing Gun." It stands for "Big Friendly Giant."

Cool - got it. Now, what is "The BFG?"
It's Dahl's 1981 award-winning children's book, which is based on a short story from Dahl's 1975 book "Danny, the Champion of the World." It's about a little girl named Sophie, who meets the BFG and teams up with him -- and the Queen of England -- on a mission to stop CEGs (Children-Eating Giants).

Wait -- what?
Yup.

So a little girl --
Well, an orphan actually.

Okay, so an orphan teams up with the Queen of England to stop giants who eat kids? That happens?!
Of all the things in that sentence, an orphan and the Queen of England are what you trip over?

*Blinks, shuffles feet* Fine. You're right. Have they made a movie about this before?
Nope. But, it was adapted into animated film for TV in 1989. It was also adapted for the stage in 2009.

Who is playing the giant?
Mark Rylance, who played a Soviet spy in Spielberg's Cold War thriller "Bridge of Spies." The director is using mo-cap to bring Rylance's performance to life.

Awesome. So, you've sold me. When can I see the movie?
